WTF bar gallery

WTF Gallery is half bar (downstairs), half exhibition space (upstairs). Probably the most popular watering hole for the artsy crowd, it also welcomes a wider public, as a quiet oasis near the Ekkamai nightlife scene. In this rugged space, you can actually hold a conversation, and there is no lack of interesting characters to interact with. But it’s not all about boozing and socializing; the gallery regularly throws ambitious and original exhibitions, without taking itself too seriously. WTF, by the way, stands for Wonderful Thai Friendship. Of course.

Octave at Marriott Sukhumvit Bangkok

There aren’t many locations with a better view of Bangkok—and certainly none with this kind of ambiance. The Marriott Hotel has taken advantage of its exposed location by building up several of its stories. Octave offers well-mixed drinks and excellent Thai-Western fusion food, as well as a breathtaking view from a total of three rooftop terraces. Definitely worth an evening in this thriving Southeast Asian metropolis.

Rooftop bar

Salt (at Ari)

Set in one of Bangkok’s hipster neighbourhoods, the center of the action here is the glasshouse dining room cum bar that’s packed every night with the bold and the beautiful. The extensive menu embraces French and Japanese culinary classics, as well as some top-notch pizzas made in a wood-fired oven; the Wagyu beef pizza is definitely recommended. The wraparound courtyard offers a more chilled-out space, while a rotating roster of DJs provide a soundtrack of house and ’80s hits.

Contemporary design

Quince (Thonglor)

A casual dining place, it bills itself as a “market kitchen,” with dishes that are local and seasonal. The 1950s house has been tastefully restored and furnished with accessories from the adjoining design store. Expect dishes with inspiration from the Mediterranean countries. And while the wine list shows a bias to the Old World, the mixed drinks menu attempts to revive the art of mixology, with retro cocktails such as the Negroni, Sazerac, and Vesper.

Maggie Choo’s

Maggie Choo’s

A speakeasy in the 1930s-Shanghai mold, it is fronted by a traditional noodle shop festooned with parasols and antique birdcages that serves a mean bowl of Ba Mee Moo Dang (BBQ pork with egg noodles in broth). Step past the curtained entrance and it’s whole new world, with a vintage casino-style bar, leather couches, Qipao-clad lovelies that pose atop the bar-top or on swings, and a jazz soundtrack. The libations are strong and aromatic, like the “Empress of India,” a delicious blend of vodka, dragon fruit, marjoram, and lime.

Bellino Wine room and Boutique

Bellino (Thonglor soi 13)

Great things sometimes come in the tiniest packages: Bellino will probably qualify as one of the smallest bars you have ever been to, with just three tables on the inside and two more on the terrace. Nevertheless, the coziness here is undeniable. The selection of wine and fresh dishes, like the venue itself, is small but on point. We’d recommend one or two mixed platters to share (olives, cheese, cold cuts), and sampling a few wines by the glass.

Clouds at Seenspace (Thonglor)

Clouds – Seenspace Thonglor

Built around an 80-year-old tree, this futuristic bar in trendy Thongor is a nod to nature. Row upon row of tiny silver balls represents raindrops, while acrylic blocks encase decomposed leaves. The ceiling is an ever-changing art installation, sometimes numerous Barbie dolls, plastic pigs, apples, or Christmas ornaments on other occasions. Innovative cocktails and the snack-size pizzas, a house specialty, attract the crowds.

Mellow (Thonglor)

Mellow (Thonglor – Penny’s Balcony)

One of the most popular hangout spots in Thonglor, Mellow has been setting trends with its NYC loft-style bar and restaurant. Divided over two floors, with a smoking terrace overlooking Penny’s Balcony enclave, Mellow’s slogan is “Indulgence in Life”, and they certainly live up to it with their fresh beats, comfort food, and a variety of art and cultural happenings. This formula makes it stand out in the competitive neighborhood, as proven by their loyal followings of Thai HiSo patrons.
