Four romantic wellness resorts in South-East Asia for the mind and body

BALI

Alila Resort, Ubud.

Alila Resort Ubud is a great start for a healing break in Bali because of its remote, stunning jungle location with its proximity, at only 15min away, to the arts, crafts, and culture of central Ubud.  Arriving at reception, the first thing you’ll observe is the harmonization of architecture and nature. Blending contemporary design and traditional Balinese architecture, the resort sits high up on the edge of the verdant Ayung River valley in Bali’s central foothills. The wood exteriors of the villas with their tall thatched roofs complement the dense botanical richness all around.  The Pool Villa provides 120sqm of space and seclusion with high ceilings, landscaped gardens with a large private swimming pool, and an open-air bathtub set in the middle of a lotus pond bustling with fish and garrulous frogs. Cobblestone walls surround each villa and line the footpaths adding to the feeling that this must be Middle Earth!

The resort restaurant Plantation built in the Balinese style with an angular straw roof over tall trunk-like pillars is the perfect setting for a contemplative morning coffee and an ‘a la carte’ buffet.  Plantation’s lunch and dinner menu infuse organic health and freshness into every dish. Executive Chef Erwan Wijaya is committed to locally sourced ‘Farm to Table’ freshness and is a proponent of the ‘Slow Food’ movement. Plantation has earned the ‘Snail of Approval’ by Slow Food Bali for its organic and sustainable food, and has been voted “Best Balinese Restaurant” in the 2014 and 2015 Now! Best of Bali Awards.  Downstairs from Plantation is Cabana Lounge, overlooking Alila Ubud’s celebrated 25-meter infinity swimming pool on the ridge of the valley. Cabana provides evening relaxation with a drink menu curated by Conrad Michael O’Riordan, whose creative flair is more than evident in the selection of signature organic cocktails, featuring ingredients picked fresh from Alila’s organic garden. The highlight of a stay at any Alila resort is to spend at least half a day at the Alila Spa. The spa provides unique holistic treatments developed in-house, blending traditional Balinese healing techniques with timeless beauty recipes using all natural ingredients.  Alila has its own line of bath and spa products.  They also feature unique outdoor treatments in inspiring settings.  As it was raining we chose the indoor Balinese massage. With the sound of the rain and the precise but intuitive palm and thumb pressure on your limbs and back, you’ll surely drift into a state of Zen.

VIETNAM

Fusion Maia Da Nang

Nestled between Bac My An and Non Nuoc is Fusion Maia Da Nang, a unique beachfront wellness retreat with private pool villas.  The first resort in Asia to offer an ‘all-spa inclusive’ service for all guests, Fusion puts the emphasis on wellness and the balance of mind, body, and soul at its luxurious and sublime Maia Spa.  The Signature therapies take a holistic approach that incorporates Reiki energy, crystals, warm coconut oil with light body brush techniques, along with aromatherapy, Himalayan heart stone, and homemade scrubs and body wraps using premium natural ingredients.  Maia Spa includes a nearby swimming pool, outdoor yoga, and tai chi deck, beauty salons, steam and sauna rooms, a wellness studio and lounge, and even a waterfall with a heated pool.  It’s a truly standout experience whether you are a first-timer or a veteran of spa regimes.  All guests are guaranteed a minimum of 2 spa treatments per day included in their standard room rate. Another highlight of Fusion is the buffet breakfast which offers an array of foods that, depending on your inclinations, can be decadent or detoxing.  If you need your beauty sleep and miss it, don’t worry – another innovative concept at Fusion is the ‘breakfast anywhere, anytime’ service.

From Fusion resort it’s well worth catching a taxi to the nearby ‘Marble Mountains’ a cluster of five marble and limestone hills impressively laid out with pagodas, temples, stunning views, and deep caverns adorned with a variety of Buddhist sculptures and strange lighting. The resort also offers daily shuttle service to and from the ancient town of Hoi An.

The Anam (Cam Rhan – Nha Trang)

You will surely be more than pleasantly surprised by a sojourn at a luxury beach resort The Anam – from entering the lobby to exploring the grounds, you’ll feel transported back in time to a bygone era of high craftsmanship, distinctive colonial designs, beautiful Moroccan-style tiling and exquisite attention to detail. Even the expansive golf-green lawns are painstakingly maintained and a pleasure to stroll on. The beach offers a lovely long stretch of golden sand with straw-made parasols and handsome wood beach recliners.

The staff is also very welcoming, highly trained and helpful. You will be impressed by the working level of English many of the local attendants possessed. The German resident manager Norbert is very informative and can give you a charming tour of the grounds and of the offerings at Lang Viet Restaurant – the resort’s Vietnamese cuisine specialist which provides a culinary journey with regional dishes from north to south. Try the sweet and sour catfish and pineapple soup with a side of signature spring rolls. Simply mouthwatering.

Highly recommended for families, the three bedrooms’ villa spread on two floors has terraces overlooking the private pool and a sloping stretch of green grass. The bathrooms are spacious and supplied with thoughtful quality amenities. A favorite evening hangout is at the beach house sports bar with its sunset happy hour. Breakfast at The Indochine offers an ample feast with premium selections of just about everything you might desire, along with fresh juices, fruits, salads, and cheeses.  The restaurant also serves a gourmet selection of Asian cuisines for dinner.

Indeed, fine food is an ongoing theme at this luxurious resort. At The Colonial, The Anam’s European restaurant, you can ask for a customized dinner after chatting with the head chef the day before. The ambiance and service are refined to perfection. You can enjoy a marvelous evening with live piano, and an excellent wine pairing introduced by the head waitress. Saigon bar next door provided premium cocktails and rare spirits accompanied by live music as well.

Overall The Anam is more like a vacation within a vacation. With a variety of rooms and villas available, 3 massive pools, a blue lagoon, and even a 3D movie theater with daily screenings, of one thing I am certain:  it won’t be long before you will wish to return.

Fusion Resort Phu Quoc

Recently opened in late 2017, we were curious to experience the much talked about Fusion Resort Phu Quoc. Situated on a tranquil golden sand beach perfect for morning strolls and sunsets, the resort has the added charm of a nearby river and tropical forest, great for kayaking and leisurely hikes. Arriving, we were impressed by the stately wood designs, the tall slanted roof and hanging lamps, and the welcome staff at reception. The Fusion brand bills itself as a spa-inclusive wellness resort and this is both accurate and an understatement.

My first full day started with a phenomenal breakfast buffet, an antidote to the fast food and urban mayhem I had just came from in Bangkok.  After seating myself on the restaurant terrace surrounded by very verdant lotus ponds and a clear view of the ocean, I perused the breakfast selection: an array of fresh juices, locally grown fruits and vegetables, organic yogurt, flavorful cheeses, exotic nuts, and a balanced variety of Vietnamese, Western, and Chinese dishes. An a la carte menu, coffee, and teas, made everything perfect.

The Maia spa was also fantastic with a variety of treatments to look forward to each day. Must try experiences are the locally sourced pepper scrub, the coconut scrub, and the traditional Vietnamese massage. The masseuses did not speak English but their hands did all the talking, demonstrating highly trained and intuitive skills. Along with the sauna, the inclusive yoga, tai-chi, meditation, cardio, and high-intensity workouts, there are a variety of ways to kick-start your morning. Combined with the kayaking, the fresh juices, and clean air, it wasn’t long before a major detox breakthrough was underway.

The layout of the villas and their interior design are also impressive. Spacious with quality traditional furnishings, and an all wood bathtub, all villas come with private patio, pool, and lawn. The lovely cobblestone walls are just high enough for privacy but low enough for great views of the hills, jungle, and river. The thatched straw roofing gave the resort a nice village feel. Buggy service was easily available but after getting oriented we enjoyed walking the grounds.

With the sunset, we recommend the pool and beach bar Soul Kitchen which has daily 2-for-1 happy hours at very reasonable prices. Steps away facing the beach, the huge round infinity pool is a great place to chill out, mix with other guests, play with the kids, or take a dip with your sweetheart. All in all, Fusion Phu Quoc offers the best of both worlds, health and well-being, pleasure and indulgence.  Combining them gracefully is the art of life and the art of Fusion.

Fusion Arrives on Phu Quoc with the Island’s First Ocean and River-Front Resort

The all-pool villa retreat is the first all-inclusive spa resort on Vietnam’s famous southern isle.

Embracing originality, individuality, and total well-being, Fusion Resort Phu Quoc, the newest member of the Fusion family, brings the brand’s innovative health and wellness lifestyle to one of Vietnam’s most up-and-coming destinations. Echoing the island’s traditional coastal architecture and fishing culture, this secluded beachfront resort is the perfect way to escape the stresses, strains, and excesses of the modern world.

Opened in June 2017, with 97 rustic yet contemporary thatched villas hugging the ocean and the lush green banks of the neighboring river, the focus here is on relaxation, rejuvenation, and understated luxury, all delivered in natural surroundings and with each guest’s health and well-being at the core of the entire experience.

Take Fusion’s famous “All-Spa Inclusive” concept, for example, where daily spa treatments can be enjoyed at no extra cost. Stroll the bamboo-lined grounds of their exclusive 20-double room facility as you choose from a wide variety of massages, reflexology experiences, facials, hair and beauty treatments, and a selection of all-natural body scrubs and wraps.

Time is not an issue here either. Courtesy of Fusion’s unique “Breakfast Anywhere, Anytime” service, enjoy the most important meal of the day wherever, and whenever you wish, whether it’s midday or midnight, and whether you’re by the pool, on the beach, or still horizontal in bed.

Between spa visits and long leisurely breakfasts, choose between two restaurants or a casual beachfront bar and dinner, all boasting healthy, nutritious and expertly designed meals, drinks, and snacks courtesy of Executive Chef and health-oriented food expert Edmond Kwan.

As part of Fusion’s holistic approach, there are also complimentary daily indoor and outdoor yoga sessions, plus a state-of-the-art health and fitness center.

“Vacations are a great time to chill out,” says Fusion’s Founder and CEO Marco van Aggele, “but they’re also a great opportunity to get fit, get healthy, and get moving.”

For entertainment and fun for all ages, Fusion has also laid on an outdoor cinema plus various games and activities and the “Mini Maia” kids club, making this resort a great choice for families as well as couples, honeymooners, groups of friends, or solo travelers.

“With the latest Fusion property,” adds Marco, “we’ve created a wellness retreat that offers outstanding comfort and down-to-earth hospitality without the fuss and formalities of the traditional ‘luxury’ beachfront resort. We’ve also chosen a location that is currently undergoing a boom in tourism thanks to its powder white sand beaches, exotic jungles, world-class diving, and some of the freshest seafood you’ll find in Vietnam.”

PRIVATE VILLAS

Filled with earthy tones, pops of green, and raw natural materials that echo the island’s famous coastline, the resort’s 97 low-lying villas sit in perfect harmony with their surroundings, opening out through large glass doors onto private walled gardens, plunge pools, floating hammocks, and shaded outdoor living areas. For the full Fusion experience, upgrade to a beach or river-front villa for unforgettable panoramic views of a waterfront paradise.

Inside, open-plan bedrooms and living areas flow naturally into spacious open-plan ensuite bathrooms with either custom-made bathtubs or monsoon showers, or both. With Fusion’s “in-villa dining” service, you needn’t set foot outside until it’s time for your next spa appointment.

Ranging in size from a spacious 126 square meters for the One Bedroom Pool Villas, to a palatial 687 square meters for the five-bedroom Grand Beach Villa, guests will find the same levels of style, elegance and charm regardless of their budget or party size.

Rates begin at USD 299 inclusive of taxes and service charge.

ALL-SPA INCLUSIVE

Spa reception area at Fusion Resort Phu Quoc
Spa reception area at Fusion Resort Phu Quoc

The cornerstone of the Fusion wellness concept is the 11,210 square-meter Maia Spa & Wellness facility, equipped with 20 double treatment rooms, spacious changing areas, a private outdoor pool, a steam room and sauna, indoor and outdoor yoga areas, a hair and beauty salon, and a fully-equipped fitness center. With the “All-Spa Inclusive” service, guests have free reign of the entire facility and its various offerings for the duration of their stay.

Sheltered open-air corridors connect the treatment rooms which surround the pepper orchard and herb garden located in the heart of the spa’s extensive grounds. Here, various ingredients are grown and cultivated for use in the spa (and in the resort’s restaurants) including the famous Phu Quoc pepper.

Maia’s signature experience, the 50-minute Natural Living Pepper massage, uses custom-blended homemade black pepper oil to realign energy flow and bring peace to the mind, body, and soul. Other treatment options include a tropical coconut and clove wrap, soothing aloe and cucumber wrap, plus foot reflexology, natural facials, and invigorating natural body scrubs.

Each private therapy room is soft on the eyes with natural tones and timbers, the space flowing seamlessly from inside to out where visitors can enjoy an invigorating outdoor shower in a secluded private garden.

Visitors are guaranteed two treatments for each night stayed, with additional treatments based on availability.

Daily yoga, tai chi, and meditation, sessions, along with personal training service, make up the health and wellness roster available to all Fusion guests.

DINING

Two contemporary restaurants, a casual beachfront bar, and dinner, plus Fusion’s “Breakfast Anywhere, Anytime” service, form the resort’s gastronomic offerings and complement the wellness ethos with a range of cuisines designed by health and wellness expert and Executive Chef Edmond Kwan.

Secret Garden, the property’s all-day dining facility with seats for 180, is where the day begins, starting with an expansive international breakfast buffet including everything from Vietnamese pho to American pancakes. As the day progresses, the menu switches to an a-la-carte mix of Cantonese, Vietnamese and international delicacies, while the comfortable lounge area is perfect for a mid-afternoon coffee or freshly pressed juice. This lofty space gets its name from the hidden grove located at its core, offering pleasant views of natural greenery for those dining inside.

The menu at Pezcá, the resort’s oceanside restaurant, highlights the abundance of local seafood the island is known for. As a resort based on the west coast of Phu Quoc, Pezcá is an ideal spot to sit and watch the island’s famous sunsets with an ice-cold beer or signature Fusion cocktail. This popular location seats 80 guests.

The informal poolside bar and dinner, Soul Kitchen, serves up healthy juices, smoothies, and light snacks, in addition to a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Fusion Resort Phu Quoc joins the Fusion portfolio of five resorts and hotels spread throughout Vietnam. This, their latest destination, situated on Vietnam’s largest island, is easily accessible from Ho Chi Minh City with over a dozen flights per day making the one-hour trip. Transfer time from Phu Quoc International Airport is approximately 40 minutes.

Address: Vung Bau Bay, Cua Can Village, Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province.

Hot Destination in Vietnam: Phu Quoc

by Nigel D’Sa & Vincent Sung – Fluxus Agency

Introduction

A journey along the southern coast of Vietnam is not complete without a visit to Phu Quoc, the country’s largest and westernmost island located off the coast of Cambodia in the Gulf of Thailand. Known for its idyllic white-sand beaches and resorts, a good third of the island is part of Phu Quoc National Park, making it an ecotourism destination as well. The island features mountains, tropical jungle and flora, hiking trails, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife.

Duong Dong is the largest town, celebrated for its sprawling night markets offering crafts, local fashions, and a plethora of fresh fish restaurants. As Phu Quoc is home to the world’s finest fish sauce, and to some of the best black pepper, a local dining experience is not to be missed. Another highlight is the sensational ice cream made by giggling street market vendors on the spot from fresh fruit of your choice!

The Phu Quoc International Airport connects the island to the major mainland cities and to various international cities such as Bangkok, Seoul, Kuala Lampur and various Chinese cities. The island can also be reached by ferry service from Vietnamese port city Ha Tien. Since 2016, tourists flying into Phu Quoc and out again can take advantage of the island’s visa exemption status.

South Vietnam – Sea, Spa and Soul

The Cities and Resorts that Make the South Stand-out

Fusion resort Nha Trang

The southern coast of Vietnam with its secluded bays and pristine islands are among the top beach and culture destinations in Asia. Starting at the country’s midpoint with stately Da Nang and the cultural glory of Hoi An, we worked our way south to the golden beaches of Nha Trang, and then southwest to fabled Phu Quoc island.  Along this sensuous meandering coastline, the diverse characters of Vietnam come alive in vivid color while new innovative spa resorts raise the bar in luxury and wellness.

Da Nang – Hoi An

Situated at Vietnam’s halfway point and sporting a busy international airport, Da Nang is Vietnam’s coastal hub and a great place to start a journey.  Once a French colonial port, it is now the country’s fourth largest city and a major urban and economic powerhouse.  But don’t let that scare you – the city boasts some of the most beautiful beaches, and is in close proximity to the stunning Marble Mountains and the historical centers of Hoi An and My Son.

Running through the city center is the picturesque Han River along which there are daily cruises. At night the illuminated bridges add special charm to the city, the longest and most famous being Dragon Bridge. Designed in the shape of a dragon, it changes colors and blows fire and water.  Nearby on the west side of the Han is the elegant café and dining district of Hai Chau.

The main beach in Da Nang is My Khe, nicknamed ‘China Beach’ by American soldiers who enjoyed its long stretch of white sand and brisk surf.  Nearby are a plethora of seafood restaurants, surf shops, hotels and tourist activities to discover. Further down is Bac My An Beach, where many of Da Nang’s five-star resorts and spas begin and Non Nuoc Beach, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia.

Fusion Maia Da Nang

The pool at Fusion Maia Da Nang

The resort also offers daily shuttle service to and from the ancient town of Hoi An.

Hoi An

One of the must-see places in Vietnam, Hoi An is a gorgeously well-preserved port city with a rich history reflected in its architecture, a mix of eras and styles from colorful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese shrines and temples, authentic Chinese shop houses, cut through with a winding river, and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge.  The old town is rife with tourism but never loses its timeless charm. There are a fresh food market, many boutique arts, and fashion shops, and by evening the streets and riverside are lit up by strings of colorful lanterns that deck the air with romance. A walk down pub street after dinner will soon have you chatting with other travelers as you sip from a glass of pastis, a fine way to round off your day.

Nha Trang

An hour south of Da Nang by airplane, Nha Trang is Vietnam’s premier beach destination with wide stretches of soft golden sand along one of the world’s most beautiful bays.  It’s also a city developed with tourism in mind and the central beachfront neighborhood has all the infrastructure you’d expect, from designer shopping centers to first class clubs and restaurants.  While this is somewhat at the expense of local flavors and traditions, there is still a lot to discover as you venture past the beachfront promenades and luxury hotels. Walk just a few blocks in and you will begin to see many local eateries with fresh seafood specialties, outdoor markets, marvelous pagodas, innumerable cafes, and local art, weaving, and wood carving workshops.

A Vespa tour is highly recommended to see all the city and its picturesque countryside villages have to offer.  Don’t miss the Long Son Pagoda, a Buddhist temple which sits high atop a hill with great views of the city and sea below.  Nightlife in Nha Trang can run wild, especially at the central beach venue Sailing Club. It really gets going after midnight with live fire shows, an indoor and outdoor dance area, and dazzling clientele from around the world. For a more laid back evening, there are both stylish and cozy rooftop bars

While the beaches along central Nha Trang are known for their extravagant nightlife – waves of young Russian and Chinese tourists descend seasonally to party it up – those looking to get away from it all, needn’t worry.  Between Cam Ranh International Airport which services Nha Trang city, is a 50 km route spotted here and there with gloriously secluded beach resorts.  Among them, we found a resort that belonged to another time and place – truly a connoisseur’s best-kept secret.

DINING

Two contemporary restaurants, a casual beachfront bar, and diner, plus Fusion’s “Breakfast Anywhere, Anytime” service, form the resort’s gastronomic offerings and complement the wellness ethos with a range of cuisines designed by health and wellness expert and Executive Chef Edmond Kwan.

The informal poolside bar and diner, Soul Kitchen, serves up healthy juices, smoothies, and light snacks, in addition to a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
